Each archetype has its own harmonious composition made by mixing them on a turntable.The installation is contextualized within a darkroom, by broadcasting live video recording of the graphics on an analog television, where the transmitted electromagnetic waves are translated into sound through using a sensor. Therefore in this case, what you hear is what you see. I recorded the sound from different sizes and length from the tools that a graphic designer frequently use, such as paper, pencil, ruler, tape, keyboard, mouse, and printer. When you see water dripping, you see time passing and create a space with depth that is spatially contains you, as if the merciless time, time that never runs backward, as if an event often change a person, but a person is not able to change past event. Shizuku Tokei is setup in a Japanese-style room, borrowing the quiet atmosphere, audience are welcomed to be seated and able to listen to the subtle dripping sound from the ice. The story is about a group of blind men (or men kept in the dark), who feel an elephant to learn what it is like. Each one touches a different part of the elephant, but only one part; side, tusk, ear, leg, so forth. They began to argue about the elephant and everyone of them insisted that he was right. The implication is that one’s subjective experience can be true, but that such experience is inherently limited by its failure to consider other truths or a totality of truth. In the process of truth finding, accessibility of information, communication, and respect for different perspectives are paramount.“The Blind Men &amp; The Elephant, in Sapporo” is an interactive audio visual installation derived from this story. The installation is framed in an empty dark space, and the audio is composed from various sounds unique to one object, familiar to the people of Sapporo. Audiences will be given a torchlight in their hand and invited to enter the empty darkroom as the role of ‘blind men’, visual projections will be triggered by the casted light while the audiences are in search for the sounds. Audiences have to figure out the object (the elephant) by gathering hints from the deconstructed sound from their hearing experience. After that, they are welcomed to join the process of seeking the truth by discussing and guessing the related object. “Oh!” everyone said. from ‘Shishi Odoshi’ (鹿威し), which literary translates as ‘scare the deer’ – an old Japanese device made to scare away birds and beasts damaging crops. Now, ‘Shishi Odoshi’ has become a popular sound sculpture found in most Japanese gardens.In winter Sapporo sees heavy snow, residents are forced to fight against the challenges presented by snow and coexist with it. The work ‘Yuki Odoshi’ was in some ways created by the people of Sapporo in borrowing the idea of ‘Shishi Odoshi’. The original principle has gradually changed from a functional tool to an entertainment/decorative object, ‘Yuki Odoshi’ is made of various snow prevention tools in order to ‘scare the snow’.Socks soaked by the snow is an everyday nuisance experienced while walking through the streets in winter. In the artwork, the socks are vessels for the snow, allowing water to drip as the snow melts onto the shovel below creating a sound. This transformation of the snow (problem) becoming a sound (entertainment), represents the love-hate relationship between the Sapporo people and the snow. The concept is to create an eligible ambience sound for Sapporo Shiryokan (札幌市資料館). It's challenging for a foreigner who’ve never been to Sapporo to compose, therefore we came out the idea of creating a scenario for a visitor on ‘How to get to Sapporo Shiryokan’ based on the collected information (資料) we could get via Google Map. A back and forth route is created from Point A: Sapporo Station (札幌駅) to the final destination, Point B: Sapporo Shiryokan (札幌市資料館).The composition of the piece is derived from the coordinate of the traffic light (信号) the visitor will pass by. For instance, the first coordinate of the traffic light (北5西3, 北4西4), ‘北’ is translated into beat, and ‘西’ signifies the note, in other words, every 5 beats (北5), note E (西3) will be played, and next followed by note F (西4) every 4 beats (北4). The piece will end at last traffic light coordination (大通西13, 大通西12) with a different sound, which represents the visitor have reached the destination. Reversed audio is added as ornament, representing the concept of back and forth as well.
